    5 Unwritten Rules of Etiquette for Buyers

    Last week we talked about rules of etiquette for sellers. You better believe buyers have their own set of rules as well! Real estate transactions are not all about writing offers and figuring out your mortgage payments, there are basic manners to keep in mind while you’re shopping for your dream home. We’ve put together this list of 5 rules of etiquette for buyers.


    Don’t stay too long. Considering the sellers have vacated the home for your showing, it’s best to keep your time there to around 15-30 minutes. Of course, a little longer is fine, especially in larger homes, but if you truly need more time, scheduling a second showing might be the way to go.

    Be clean

    Consider that the sellers are likely doing some extra cleaning while their house is on the market. Take your shoes off when you enter so you don’t track in mud or dirt. Please don’t bring in food or drinks that could spill or make a mess. You are a guest in the home at this point, so just be polite.

    The less bodies in the house the better

    Don’t bring your entire extended family and/or friends to the showing. That many opinions can become confusing and overwhelming. Plus, it’s not them who will be spending possibly the rest of their lives living in the house you’re about to buy, so remember to keep it personal. Your children also shouldn’t accompany you to the first showing, if they’re old enough, they can join you at a second showing. This way your kiddos are only seeing the homes you’re seriously considering and don’t become overwhelmed themselves.

    Money, money, money

    Sellers want to know you’re a serious and qualified buyer. Be sure to get pre-approved by a mortgage lender. Not only will this prove to sellers that you’re not just wasting their time, it will keep you from wasting your own time by ensuring you’re only looking at houses in your price range.

    Listen to your realtor

    Your realtor probably has some suggestions on how much to offer, what repairs to request be completed by the seller, and negotiating. There’s a reason you’re working with a realtor, and this is it! Take their advice. They’re working for you!

    Buying a home can be stressful, we know that! It’s easy to get lost in all the legal ins and outs of it but remember these tips and don’t lose your manners in the meantime!
